About Michael Bellerue

Michael Bellerue has been working in tech for well over 25 years, many of those years as a sysadmin using monitoring tools to monitor various devices and environments. A jack of all trades in IT, Michael has solved diverse IT issues throughout the years and is known for creative solutions to those irritating IT problems.

Michael likes bringing teams together — if there’s a grudge, he’s the one throwing out the olive branch. He also learned early on not to accept “it can’t be done.” He had a friend who would pass along whatever limitations others placed on a problem, and more often than not, they’d find out the thing could, in fact, be done. After a while, Michael wised up. His response became simple: “Challenge accepted.” Them: “Nagios can’t do APM.” Michael: “Challenge accepted.”

His areas of expertise include Nagios, Proxmox, ZFS, (and of course, puns.) He’s also been diving down the SNMP rabbit hole for the last year. If you want to find him after the session, challenge him to a round of Valheim or Astroneer.

You can't monitor that with Nagios! APM edition

When lots of people repeat the same thing using the same language, it's worth being skeptical. Application performance monitoring has long been called an Achilles' heel for Nagios — everyone repeating that Nagios just can't do APM. So the presenters started digging into it themselves.

This year, Nagios sent them to the Red Hat Summit in Atlanta. As a fun side project, they created a bean bag game that they could monitor. They built a small container-based web application to keep score, and used that as an excuse to dive into the world of APM.

In this session, we will show how APM is not only doable with Nagios, and it might be even easier than you think.
